The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with a clear and honest explanation for what it described as a “sudden and surprising overhaul” of the country’s military leadership.
The appeal comes following the President’s recent decision to dismiss several of the Service Chiefs he appointed nearly two years ago.
The move has sparked widespread public debate and speculation about the motives behind the action.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC expressed concern that the timing of the sackings coincided with unconfirmed reports of an attempted coup in parts of the country.

Abdullahi said that although the President has the constitutional authority to reshuffle the military hierarchy, the manner and timing of the decision have raised serious questions about what prompted the move.
“The government’s response to the coup rumours has been vague and inconsistent, which has left many Nigerians confused and anxious,” Abdullahi stated.
“Transparency is crucial in moments like this, and the people deserve to know the truth.”
The ADC noted that several of the affected officers had only served a short time in office, with the former Chief of Defence Staff reportedly promoted less than a year ago.
The party warned that such an abrupt change could unsettle the armed forces and disrupt ongoing operations.
“The sudden removal of senior officers without clear justification may create instability within the military establishment,” the statement read.
“We urge the President to ensure that the leadership transition does not compromise national security.”
The opposition party further emphasised that the government owed Nigerians a “full and factual account” of the reasons behind the reshuffle, especially amid persistent security challenges across the country.
According to the ADC, insecurity in the North and other regions continues to worsen, making it imperative for the government to maintain continuity and competence in its security leadership.
“The administration must show that its actions are guided by national interest rather than political considerations,” Abdullahi added.
“The country is still battling insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping, and any disruption in command could have serious consequences.”
The party also warned that the wholesale replacement of military heads could fuel conspiracy theories and public distrust if not properly explained.
It urged the government to engage openly with citizens to prevent speculation and misinformation.
“As an opposition party, our only concern is the peace and stability of Nigeria,” the ADC said.
“Recent developments in neighbouring countries like Chad and Niger should remind us of the dangers of political missteps in times of insecurity.”
