Afeez Owo Blames Social Media For Escalating marital crisis

Popular Nigerian actor and filmmaker, Afeez Owo, has revealed how social media played a significant role in escalating his marital crisis with his wife, actress Mide Martins.

Speaking on the Behind The Fame podcast, Owo stated that what could have been a private matter between husband and wife became sensationalised after his wife made a public post about their separation in 2016.

He explained that the incident began after a minor disagreement between them, which led to him leaving their matrimonial home.

According to him, he had only planned to spend a couple of nights away but extended his stay after Mide’s public statement.

“The news of our separation went viral. And the fight became our first and the last fight as a couple. It was very serious but we later reconciled,” he said.

The actor admitted that he did not handle the situation well at the time.

“I think I didn’t handle it well because I angrily left the house after we had a misunderstanding,” he explained.

Owo recalled that the dispute, which initially appeared minor, grew out of proportion due to the influence of online reactions and widespread discussions on social media platforms.

“Although, my intention was to spend two nights at a hotel and return home, but after she accused me of leaving the house, I now decided to stay away for more days,” he narrated.

He further disclosed that reconciliation came after Mide approached him with an apology, an action that eventually brought peace back into their home.

“She eventually came to apologise, and we reconciled. It was an issue we should have resolved between ourselves, but social media made the matter escalate even more,” Owo said.

The couple’s marital issues first became public in April 2016 when Mide Martins confirmed the separation in a social media post, accusing Owo of moving out of their home for three months following their argument.

Her statement at the time attracted widespread attention from fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry, sparking speculation about the state of their marriage.

DAILY POST recalls that Mide Martins is the daughter of the late actress Funmi Martins, who passed away in May 2002.

Following the death of Funmi Martins, Owo, who was her Manager, got married to Mide in 2003.

The couple, who have since reconciled, continue to maintain their marriage despite the turbulence caused by the incident nearly a decade ago.

Owo’s revelation highlights the increasing impact of social media on personal relationships, particularly among public figures whose private lives often attract public scrutiny.
