China Unveils Plans For Pregnancy-Capable Humanoid Robot

China is preparing to introduce the world’s first humanoid robot designed to achieve pregnancy using an artificial womb, officials confirmed.

The project, developed by Kaiwa Technology in Guangzhou, is expected to be launched in 2026, marking a major step in reproductive science.

Speaking at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, project lead Dr Zhang Qifeng said the technology had reached a point where integration into a humanoid robot was possible.

“The scientific foundation is already strong,” Dr Zhang stated. “Our next phase is to merge this knowledge with robotics to create a pregnancy-capable machine.”

Artificial womb technology has been under development globally for several years. In 2017, American researchers successfully kept premature lambs alive for weeks inside “biobags” that replicated the womb environment.

Unlike earlier systems, Kaiwa Technology’s prototype is designed to manage the entire process, from fertilisation to full-term birth. This includes housing embryos in artificial amniotic fluid and supplying nutrients and oxygen through a synthetic umbilical cord.

According to the developers, the robot will be able to simulate the hormonal and physiological environment necessary for foetal development.

The company has projected the cost of this solution at around 100,000 yuan (£11,000), which is significantly cheaper than conventional human surrogacy.

Dr Zhang explained that part of the motivation behind the project is the rising infertility crisis in China, where falling birth rates have raised national concerns.

“Providing an alternative method of childbearing may help address future demographic challenges,” he said.

The announcement has sparked international attention, with experts noting the ethical, medical and social implications of robots carrying human pregnancies.

Kaiwa Technology confirmed that further testing will be conducted before the 2026 launch, with global researchers invited to observe trials and evaluate outcomes.
