A former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum and respected academic, Professor Jibrin Aminu, has died at the age of 85, it was announced on Thursday.
According to family sources, Professor Aminu passed away peacefully in his residence in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Confirming the development, Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, issued a condolence statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonousikou.
Governor Fintiri described the late Aminu as “a towering figure in Nigeria’s intellectual and political landscape” whose demise marks a great loss to the nation.

“The loss is monumental, not only for Adamawa State, but for the entire country which greatly benefited from his wisdom, scholarship and decades of patriotic service,” the governor said.
Professor Aminu served in various key national roles, including as Minister of Education, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Nigerian Ambassador to the United States, and Senator representing Adamawa Central.
“In each of these capacities, he embodied dignity, insight, and an unwavering commitment to national development,” Fintiri added.
Widely regarded as a committed statesman, Aminu was instrumental in shaping Nigeria’s education and petroleum policies during his time in office.
Governor Fintiri further remarked, “Nigeria has lost one of its finest minds, a devoted public servant and a distinguished son of Adamawa.”
He described the deceased as “a rare breed of patriot and a silent reformer whose legacy spans education, diplomacy and politics.”
The governor also highlighted the academic contributions of Professor Aminu, who had earlier made his mark as a scholar before entering public service.
“His life’s work is an enduring gift to the nation, and his humility and wisdom will be sorely missed,” the statement read.
Fintiri extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and all Nigerians who were touched by the deceased’s impactful life.
He prayed that Almighty God forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
“Though his passing leaves a void, his legacy remains a guiding light for generations to come,” the governor concluded.
