Former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, has died at the age of 78.
The elder statesman passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2025.
A statement issued by the Ogbeh family confirmed his death, noting that he died peacefully.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather; Chief Audu Ogbeh,” the family said.

The statement added, “He passed away on the 9th of August 2025 at the fulfilled age of 78.”
The family described Ogbeh as a man who “departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service, and dedication to our nation and community.”
“We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the statement continued.
Chief Audu Ogbeh served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
He was also a respected politician, writer, and farmer.
The family announced that funeral arrangements would be made public in due course.
“We will communicate the burial details once they are finalised,” the statement read.
They also expressed gratitude to friends, colleagues, and well-wishers for their prayers and support during this time.
“We will appreciate some privacy at this time while we mourn the loss of our patriarch,” the statement said.
Born on July 28, 1947, Ogbeh was a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, having also served as National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, between 2001 and 2005.
Throughout his career, he was known for advocating agricultural reforms, rural development, and self-sufficiency in food production.
His initiatives included policies aimed at boosting Nigeria’s agricultural output and supporting farmers.

Chief Ogbeh is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
