The Kano State Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed a rise in respiratory infection cases across the state and called on residents to remain calm.
In a public health advisory issued on Thursday, the agency disclosed that it had observed an increase in upper respiratory tract infections in several communities.
According to the statement, common symptoms being reported include cough, sore throat, fever and nasal congestion.

The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Muhammad Abbas, clarified that the development does not suggest the outbreak of any new COVID-19 variant in the state.
“We have observed a rise in upper respiratory tract infections across the state, but there are currently no confirmed cases of any COVID-19 variant in Kano. Residents should remain calm and avoid unnecessary panic,” the statement read.
Prof. Abbas explained that most of the reported cases are mild and typically resolve within seven to 10 days without serious complications.
The agency advised residents to seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen, particularly where there is high fever lasting more than three days, chest pain or difficulty in breathing.
It added that children under five, elderly persons, pregnant women and individuals with underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes and HIV are more vulnerable to complications.
The centre urged the public to observe preventive measures, including regular handwashing, proper cough etiquette, adequate ventilation of indoor spaces and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.
It further encouraged residents to ensure that their routine immunisations are up to date as part of efforts to reduce the spread of infections across the state.
