The Northern Governors Forum, NGF, has urged the National Assembly to enact legislation for the establishment of state police to enhance security efforts across Nigeria.
The appeal was made in a communiqué issued at the end of the Forum’s meeting on Saturday, May 10, 2025, and read by its Chairman, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State.
“The Forum resolved to support the creation of state police and called on the National Assembly to expedite action.
on the enactment of the legal framework for its take-off,” Governor Yahaya said.

The statement was shared with journalists by Mamman Mohammed, Director General of Press and Media Affairs to the Governor of Yobe State.
The governors also agreed to strengthen surveillance along inter-state borders in order to better tackle insurgency, banditry, and other forms of criminal activity in the region.
They further acknowledged the Federal Government’s efforts in addressing national security issues and reducing infrastructural deficits, according to the communiqué.
“The Forum appreciates the Federal Government’s role in tackling the challenges facing the nation and looks forward to continued cooperation,” the statement added.
In addition, the governors pledged to work more closely with the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, to implement unified strategies against the country’s growing security threats.
All 19 Northern governors were in attendance, alongside chairmen of their respective state traditional councils, reflecting a united front in addressing pressing national concerns.
The meeting is part of the Forum’s ongoing efforts to present regional solutions to security and governance challenges within Nigeria.
