A woman, Zainab Alhassan, on Tuesday secured a divorce from her husband, Tijjani Muhammad, after he allegedly refused to repair her damaged mobile phone valued at N70,000.
The case was heard before a Shari’a Court, where Zainab told the judge that she no longer wished to remain in the marriage and sought separation through Khul’i, a form of divorce in which a woman returns her dowry to her husband.
She explained that her decision was final and that she was ready to refund the N30,000 dowry she had received from Tijjani in order to regain her freedom.

Zainab told the court that the disagreement started when she was watching a movie on her phone, and her husband became angry, seized the phone from her, and smashed it.
She further stated that despite the damage, her husband refused to repair or replace the phone, which prompted her decision to seek divorce.
However, Zainab admitted before the court that she had no witness to support her claim that her husband destroyed the phone.
In his defence, Tijjani said he had no objection to the dissolution of the marriage but denied ever damaging his wife’s mobile phone.
He told the court that he was willing to accept the refund of the dowry as stipulated under the Khul’i process.
Presiding Judge, Mu’awiyya Shehu, granted the divorce based on Khul’i after confirming both parties’ agreement to end the marriage.
The judge also dismissed Zainab’s request for the court to compel her husband to repair the damaged phone, ruling that it was not part of the Khul’i settlement.
